What is Rattan?
Rattan is a type of climbing palm that can be found in tropical regions around the world. One of the most common places where rattan grows is southeast Asia. The greatest amount of the world’s rattan grows in Indonesia which is where my Bali round bags are handmade. The most common use for the naturally renewable palm is making furniture but rattan is also used for both food and shelter making it an invaluable resource. According to the World Wildlife Fund the rattan trade is worth US $4 billion. Purchasing crafts made from rattan helps local artisans in Bali make an income and support their families
